LYNNWOOD, WA (January 8, 2011) – Lynnwood Rotary Club recognize two local students as students of the month for December 2011.

Erik Engstrom, a senior from Lynnwood High School who participates in DECA, Tennis, Robotics, and Student Government, while maintaining a 3.92 grade point average.  He shared with the club that his future aspirations are to pursue a degree in aerospace or computer engineering.

Ramzee Khalil, a senior from Meadowdale High School who participates in Link Crew, National Honor Society, Football, Track and Field, ASB, football, track and is a Junior Camp Counselor for Edmonds Day Camp.  He shared with the club that his future goals are to pursue a degree in business and to own his own restaurant.

Press Release (11-14-2011) – Lynnwood Rotary Makes $10,000 Donation to Affordable Housing Charity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LYNNWOOD, WA (November 14, 2011) – Lynnwood Rotary Club, in cooperation with Rotary District 5030 presented a $10,000 donation to Housing Hope at a meeting on November 3, 2011 at Edmonds Community College.   Ed Peterson, Executive Director of Housing Hope received the check from Lynnwood Rotary President Stan McKenzie, joined by Rotarians Lisa Gallucci and Andrew Ballard who made significant contributions to secure the $10, 000 gift.

Housing Hope currently manages 312 units in eighteen housing developments, and has helped 228 families build and own their own homes.   Housing Hope offers a full range of affordable housing options throughout Snohomish County and has a satellite office in Lynnwood.   They provide housing services including emergency shelter, transitional housing, affordable-rent units and homeownership opportunities.   Housing Hope focuses its activities on Snohomish County and Camano Island, collaborating and cooperating with local communities to make sure programs address the needs of local residents with the lowest incomes and the greatest need.  They additionally fund child development programs for children—Tomorrow’s Hope Childcare Center, special needs assessment, a school liaison program, and individualized attention by a child specialist.

The $10,000 donation will be used to support the College of Hope in Lynnwood, which is an adult-education learning program that focuses on life skills in four areas: Family Life, Economic Well-Being, Health and Wellness and Housing Expertise.

Press Release (11-14-2011) – Lynnwood High Senior Awarded With Student of the Month Honors

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 

LYNNWOOD, WA (November 14, 2011) – Lynnwood High School senior Scott Dotson was recognized as Student of the Month by the Lynnwood Rotary Club at a meeting on November 4, 2011.

Scott is a member of the National Honor Society maintaining a 3.8 grade point average.  He is also a school athletic trainer and has logged over 90 hours of community service.  He intends to attend Life Pacific Bible College in the fall, pursuing a vocation in ministry.

The award was presented to Scott by Lynnwood Rotary President-Elect Jeffery Goodwin.

Press Release (10-11-11) – Charity Golf Tournament Scores Big for Local Community

LYNNWOOD, WA (Oct. 11, 2011) – The Lynnwood Rotary Club announced that their annual golf tournament on September 26, 2011 at the Everett Golf and Country Club raised nearly $20,000 for charity.

“The tournament was a huge success.  Besides being a great day for golf, we had great sponsorship and turn-out.”  Said Gary Deiner, the tournament chairperson.

“The beauty of our fundraisers is that 100% of the proceeds are returned to the community,”  said Lynnwood Rotary President Stan McKensie.  “In this case much of the money benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Snohomish County, with the reminder going to the many community projects that we sponsor throughout the year.  We do a lot in the community and events like this really help us to accomplish all that we do!”

The tournament was won by a team led by former State Senator and Snohomish City Councilman Gary Nelson.  His team consisted of Gary Schmitt, Chairman of the Board of The Bank of Washington, Mike Appleby, Vice-President at Chicago Title and Dan Tomasek, Broker, Windemere Real Estate.

Press Release (06-20-2011) – LOCAL NONPROFIT DONATES DIALYSIS MACHINES TO RURAL INDIA

LYNNWOOD, WA (Jun. 20, 2011) – Incoming Lynnwood Rotary President Stan McKensie travelled to Kerala, India to attend a dedication ceremony for two kidney dialysis machines donated to St. John’s Hospital in a ceremony on June 18, 2011.  This culminates a year-long partnership project between Lynnwood Rotary, two local Rotary clubs in India, and Rotary International.   This donation is essential to the rural communities around Kerala where renal complications are commonplace due to poisonous snake bites.  Dialysis treatments are crucial to the survival of these patients.

Dignitaries on hand for the ceremony were local District Governor Rtn. G. Viswanathan, local Rotary membership, and community leaders.

Press Release (06-09-2011) – EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT VOCATIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAM SHOWCASES STUDENT-BUILT HOUSE

BOTHELL, WA (Jun. 9, 2011) – Edmonds Vocational Education instructors and students held an open house in Bothell, Washington on June 9, 2011 to showcase the home that they planned and built this past school year.  The program is a thirty-six year partnership between the Edmonds School District and Lynnwood Rotary Club.

Each year a house is planned and constructed by students from Lynnwood, Meadowdale, Edmonds/Woodway, Scriber Lake and Mountlake Terrace High Schools.  This year’s house is located at 214 159th St, SE., Bothell, Washington, with an appraised value of $369,000.  Each year the proceeds from the house project are reinvested to financially support the program in perpetuity.

Local dignitaries on hand for the event were Edmonds School District Superintendent Nick Brossoit, Edmonds Public Schools Foundation Chair Debbie Bodal, Edmonds School District Director of Career and Technical Education Mark Madison, Rotary District 5030 Assistant Governor Stan Miner, Lynnwood Rotary President Andrew Ballard, and Lynnwood Rotary Foundation Chair Travis Snider.

Three students were introduced as standouts of the program by their instructor, Scott Hammond and teaching assistant, Micah Burlingame.  Jacob Settlemyer, a drafting class graduate of Edmonds/Woodway High School who spent his entire summer drawing up the architectural plans for the project, Dakota Farmer, a carpentry student at Lynnwood High who showed exceptional aptitude towards the planning and building of the structure, and Lina Kadmiri, a student at Edmonds/Woodway High School who planned the interior design of the house.

The building construction program offers students an opportunity to learn entry-level carpentry skills such as blueprint reading, estimating, zoning and building codes, job site development, forming, pouring and finishing concrete, wall and roof framing, siding, interior finishing, roofing, and teamwork.

BOTHELL, WA (Jun. 9, 2011) – Rotary International President Ray Klinginsmith awarded Lynnwood Rotary with the 2010-2011 “Presidential Citation with Distinction,” in a ceremony conducted on June 9, 2011 in Bothell, Washington.  Rotary District 5030 Assistant Governor Stan Miner presented Lynnwood Rotary President Andrew Ballard with the award.

Ballard addressed the club and thanked them for their service in the service year (July 2010 – June 2011).  “This award is for you.  It is because of your efforts as a club,” he shared.

The award is presented annually to Rotary clubs throughout the world who demonstrate active community engagement in four areas: education, local community service, international community service, and Rotary service.  Clubs showing exceptional contribution to each area of community engagement are given the additional qualifier, “with distinction.”
